The HONOR Magic9 vs Magic8 comparison brings a smaller screen, much higher-resolution cameras and a larger battery, but several familiar specifications remain. Both phones use Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and their RAM and storage choices are unchanged. Charging power actually falls on the newer model.
This comparison covers the China versions of the 2026 Magic9 and 2025 Magic8. Their main differences sit in the body dimensions, photography hardware and battery capacity, rather than a new processor generation.
Design and Build: Smaller, but Slightly Heavier
The Magic9 measures 151.00mm tall and 72.28mm wide, making it 6.12mm shorter and 1.75mm narrower than the Magic8. That reduces the phone’s overall footprint, although thickness increases from 7.95mm to 8.49mm. Weight also rises slightly, from approximately 205g to 209g.

The smaller dimensions therefore do not produce a lighter phone. Instead, HONOR fits a larger battery inside a shorter body. Both models retain IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings, so the newer model does not introduce a different set of headline dust and water protection ratings.
| Feature | HONOR Magic9 | HONOR Magic8 |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | 151.00 x 72.28 x 8.49mm | 157.12 x 74.03 x 7.95mm |
| Weight | 209g | 205g |
| Protection ratings | IP68 / IP69 / IP69K | IP68 / IP69 / IP69K |
Display: A Move from 6.58 to 6.37 Inches
The Magic9 has a 6.37-inch OLED display, down from the Magic8’s 6.58-inch panel. Resolution changes from 1256 x 2760 to 1236 x 2664 pixels. The newer phone offers less screen area for videos and split-screen layouts, in exchange for its more compact dimensions.
Both screens reach 120Hz, so the maximum refresh rate stays the same. The Magic8 also has LTPO refresh-rate control. The size reduction is the clearest everyday difference here; there is no jump to a higher maximum refresh rate to accompany the new generation.
| Feature | HONOR Magic9 | HONOR Magic8 |
|---|---|---|
| Screen size | 6.37 inches | 6.58 inches |
| Panel | OLED | LTPO OLED |
| Resolution | 1236 x 2664 | 1256 x 2760 |
| Maximum refresh rate | 120Hz | 120Hz |
Honor magic9 vs Magic8 Camera: 200MP Sensors Replace the 50MP and 64MP Pair
Honor Magic9 Camera
The Magic9 has a 200MP main camera with an f/1.9 aperture and a 1/1.4-inch sensor. The Magic8 uses a 50MP main camera with the same aperture and a smaller 1/1.56-inch sensor. Optical stabilisation remains available on both main cameras.
The telephoto changes from 64MP with 3x optical magnification to 200MP with 3.5x magnification. That gives the Magic9 a longer native telephoto view as well as a higher pixel count. Both phones retain a 50MP f/2.0 ultrawide camera, making the main and telephoto cameras the substantial hardware changes. Higher resolution alone does not establish better results in every lighting condition.
Video and Selfies
Rear video on the Magic9 reaches 4K at 120fps, compared with 4K at 60fps on the Magic8. This adds a higher-frame-rate recording option. The front camera moves from 50MP to 55MP, while both front cameras retain an f/2.0 aperture and 4K recording at up to 60fps.
| Feature | HONOR Magic9 | HONOR Magic8 |
|---|---|---|
| Main camera | 200MP, f/1.9, OIS | 50MP, f/1.9, OIS |
| Main sensor size | 1/1.4-inch | 1/1.56-inch |
| Telephoto | 200MP, f/2.6, OIS, 3.5x | 64MP, f/2.5, OIS, 3x |
| Ultrawide | 50MP, f/2.0 | 50MP, f/2.0 |
| Maximum rear video | 4K at 120fps | 4K at 60fps |
| Front camera | 55MP, f/2.0 | 50MP, f/2.0 |
| Front video | 4K at 60fps | 4K at 60fps |
Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Remains
Both phones run Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with an Adreno 840 GPU. Their CPU configurations also match: two Prime cores at 4.6GHz and six Performance cores at 3.62GHz. The Magic9 therefore does not gain a newer chipset or higher specified CPU clocks over the Magic8.
Software, cooling and power management can still affect sustained performance, but the processor specifications do not support a simple generational speed-up claim. The camera and battery changes are much clearer distinctions than the shared computing hardware.
| Feature | HONOR Magic9 | HONOR Magic8 |
|---|---|---|
| Chipset | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 |
| CPU | 2 x 4.6GHz + 6 x 3.62GHz | 2 x 4.6GHz + 6 x 3.62GHz |
| GPU | Adreno 840 | Adreno 840 |
Software: MagicOS 11 Replaces MagicOS 10 at Launch
The Magic9 launches with MagicOS 11 based on Android 17. The Magic8 launched with MagicOS 10 based on Android 16, giving the newer phone a later starting point for both Android and HONOR’s interface.
These are launch versions, rather than a claim that every Magic8 still runs its original software. Update availability can change after release. A confirmed support duration for these China configurations is unavailable, so the comparison does not assign either phone an assumed number of future Android upgrades.
| Feature | HONOR Magic9 | HONOR Magic8 |
|---|---|---|
| Launch interface | MagicOS 11 | MagicOS 10 |
| Launch Android version | Android 17 | Android 16 |
Storage and RAM: The Same Four Combinations
Both models start with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. A 12GB/512GB version sits above that, followed by 16GB/512GB and 16GB/1TB configurations. Neither the entry storage tier nor the maximum RAM capacity changes.
The Magic9’s higher-resolution cameras and 4K120 recording make storage capacity relevant, but HONOR has retained the same range of choices rather than increasing the minimum capacity.
| Feature | HONOR Magic9 | HONOR Magic8 |
|---|---|---|
| 12GB RAM options | 256GB / 512GB | 256GB / 512GB |
| 16GB RAM options | 512GB / 1TB | 512GB / 1TB |
| Maximum storage | 1TB | 1TB |
Battery and Charging: More Capacity, Lower Charging Power
The Magic9 has an 8,000mAh battery, compared with 7,000mAh in the Magic8. That adds 1,000mAh, or approximately 14% more typical capacity. This provides a larger energy reserve, although actual endurance also depends on the display, software and workload.
Charging moves in the opposite direction. Wired power drops from 90W to 80W, while wireless charging falls from 80W to 50W. Maximum wattage is not a full-charge time, but the Magic8 retains the higher charging-power limits.
| Feature | HONOR Magic9 | HONOR Magic8 |
|---|---|---|
| Typical battery capacity | 8,000mAh | 7,000mAh |
| Wired charging | 80W | 90W |
| Wireless charging | 50W | 80W |
What Has Changed Most?
The Magic9 concentrates its changes on a smaller body, dual 200MP cameras, 4K120 video and a larger battery. The Magic8 keeps a larger screen and higher charging power.
Their shared processor and identical storage choices make this a camera and battery-focused revision, with clear trade-offs in display size and charging.
