HONOR Magic9 Pro Max vs Magic8 Pro: What Has Changed?

The HONOR Magic9 Pro Max vs Magic8 Pro comparison brings a new name to the top Magic flagship, along with a 200MP main camera, a newer Snapdragon processor and a larger battery. The Magic9 Pro Max succeeds the Magic8 Pro, while retaining a 200MP telephoto camera and 80W wireless charging.

This comparison focuses on the China configurations. That distinction matters for battery capacity and software commitments, which can differ across regions. The changes also come with trade-offs: the newer phone is wider and heavier, and its maximum wired charging power is lower.

Design and Build: A Wider, Heavier Flagship

The Magic9 Pro Max measures 161.64 x 76.98 x 8.59mm and weighs approximately 233g. The Magic8 Pro measures about 161.2 x 75 x 8.3mm and weighs 219g. Height stays close, but the newer phone is almost 2mm wider and 14g heavier.

HONOR moves to a metal unibody enclosure on the Magic9 Pro Max, replacing the Magic8 Pro’s aluminium frame and glass-back construction. The newer design gives the camera hardware more prominence, although the larger body is an equally important everyday difference.

Both China models carry IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings. Three-dimensional face recognition also remains available, alongside fingerprint unlocking.

Display: A Slightly Larger 6.8-Inch Screen

The Magic9 Pro Max has a 6.8-inch OLED display, up from 6.71 inches on the Magic8 Pro. Resolution rises from 1256 x 2808 to 1320 x 2868 pixels. Both support adaptive refresh rates reaching 120Hz, so the newer screen adds size and pixels without a higher maximum refresh rate.

The Magic8 Pro already has a high-resolution OLED panel, making this a modest size change rather than a move to a completely different display class. Both phones also support HDR and Dolby Vision, retaining familiar playback capabilities for compatible content.

Cameras: A 200MP Main Camera and ARRI Video Tools

Main and Telephoto Hardware

The Magic9 Pro Max increases main-camera resolution from 50MP to 200MP. Its main lens has an f/1.57 aperture, compared with f/1.6 on the Magic8 Pro, and both cameras include optical stabilisation. This is the largest resolution change across the camera system.

Both phones have a 200MP periscope telephoto with an f/2.6 aperture and optical stabilisation. Native magnification changes from 3.7x to 3.5x, giving the older phone a slightly longer optical telephoto view. The 50MP f/2.0 ultrawide remains, while the front camera moves from 50MP to 55MP. Both front systems include a 3D depth camera.

Video and Colour Control

Standard rear recording reaches 4K at 120fps on both generations. The Magic9 Pro Max adds ARRI CINEMA Mode with LogC3, 10-bit colour and ARRI Wide Gamut 3, supported by the HONOR Imaging Chip H1. ARRI mode reaches 4K60, which is separate from the standard 4K120 recording option.

These tools add more control over colour and post-production, rather than raising the maximum standard video resolution. Front recording remains 4K at up to 60fps.

Magic9 Pro Max Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6

The Magic9 Pro Max replaces Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The GPU also changes from Adreno 840 to Adreno 850. Both processors have eight CPU cores, but their core arrangements and clock speeds differ.

The newer chip has two Prime cores running at up to 5.01GHz, compared with 4.6GHz on the Magic8 Pro. Its six Performance cores are split into two groups of three. This is a genuine processor-generation change, unlike the shared Snapdragon platform in the standard Magic9 and Magic8.

Software: MagicOS 11 and Android 17

The Magic9 Pro Max launches with MagicOS 11 based on Android 17. The Magic8 Pro launched with MagicOS 10 based on Android 16. Both include HONOR’s YOYO assistant features, AI translation and multitasking tools.

MagicOS 11 adds interface customisation and AI call-assistant functions, while retaining the broader HONOR software ecosystem. Launch software is the clearest confirmed distinction here. A fixed update commitment for the China-market Magic9 Pro Max remains unconfirmed, so overseas support policies should not be treated as a promise for this configuration.

Storage and RAM: The Same Capacity Choices

Both China models offer 12GB RAM with 256GB or 512GB storage. Their higher-memory versions pair 16GB RAM with either 512GB or 1TB storage. Neither the minimum capacity nor the maximum RAM amount increases.

The newer camera features make storage relevant for video work, but the available capacity range is familiar. A move from a 512GB Magic8 Pro to a 512GB Magic9 Pro Max does not automatically add more storage or RAM; the selected memory configuration still matters.

Battery and Charging: Larger Capacity, Lower Wired Power

The Magic9 Pro Max has an 8,800mAh battery, compared with 7,200mAh in the China-market Magic8 Pro. That adds 1,600mAh, or approximately 22% more typical capacity. The increase comes alongside the newer phone’s wider body and additional weight.

Maximum wired charging falls from 120W to 100W. Wireless charging remains at 80W, so the Magic9 Pro Max retains the older phone’s wireless power ceiling while prioritising a larger battery. Capacity and charging wattage alone do not establish a full-charge time or measured runtime.

The Main Changes

The Magic9 Pro Max focuses on the main camera, ARRI recording tools, a newer processor and a larger battery. The Magic8 Pro retains faster maximum wired charging, slightly longer optical telephoto reach and a narrower, lighter body. Storage choices and 80W wireless charging remain unchanged.
